Teeth Whitening

Close up comparison of before and after teeth whitening treatment on a Black man's smileEvery one of us worries about how we look to some degree. It is inescapable. Each morning we wake up and get ready to face the world. We look in the mirror, checking to make sure we look our best. We wonder what other people will think when they look at us. What do you think is one of the first things people notice when they meet us for the first time? It is our smile. Over time, our teeth can lose some of their luster. This means our smile does not look as bright as it once did. This is especially true for those patients who smoke or who drink tea or coffee. Even certain foods can stain our teeth. Tooth enamel becomes more porous as we age, which means it can stain easier. What can be done about it?

Thankfully, there is something patients can do to regain some of their lost luster and improve their smiles. It is called teeth whitening. It only takes a single appointment. Patients can be in and out of the office in less than an hour with a much brighter smile and a mouthful of confidence. For those patients interested in doing something about the brightness of their smiles, come to our office, Barnes Dental, to find out more. Come see us today.

Concerns About Whitening

We have all seen the countless whitening product ads on television and social media. They bombard us each and every day. The ads promise to brighten our smiles with easy-to-use products. They are far less expensive than the professional treatments, so why not consider them? There are risks when using the at-home whitening kits. They can permanently damage a patient’s gum tissue and teeth. Also, the effects of the over-the-counter products do not last as long as the professionally applied ones. It is also very easy to overexpose teeth and gums to the harsh chemicals which can cause damage.

Professional Solutions vs. Over-the-Counter Solutions

The at-home kids have a 10-20% carbamide peroxide solution while the professional grade solution used by our office has a 40% carbamide peroxide solution content. With the higher concentration of the whitening solution, the effects last much longer with professional treatment.

With so many patients suffering damage from using the at-home whitening kits, the American Dental Association issued a warning. It states, that when used inappropriately, over-the-counter products can cause irreparable damage to the oral cavity.

Patients who want to brighten their smile, and have a whitening procedure done, should come to our office to find out the details. We can go over the information in our office, Barnes Dental, and answer any questions patients might have. Patients can also reach us by phone at the following number; (971) 441-5520. Give us a call today. We are always here to help our patients.
